Biography of Charles J. Salvo
CCC Man, Camp McCoy, WI & Camp Kemmerer, Kemmerer WY
My father, Charles J. Salvo, enlisted in the CCC at Camp McCoy on July 9, 1939. After four days of conditioning he was sent to Camp Kemmerer, DG-38 in Kemmerer Wyoming. They had a 'P' on the papers as back then he went with the middle name of Pasquale...don't know why.
He had two photographs of camp. One of the barracks interior, which was "commonly called 'The Barn"', with himself sitting on another man's trunk and another enrollee in the photo, "Rozzy or Rosie (a nice kid)". In another photo outside, he is with a good friend, Louie "Minnie" Minnela (a darn good dancer), and two dogs, Tootsie (the big dog) and Muscles (the little dog). Both photographs were taken September 30, 1939. The photos have writing on the back and I thought you'd like to see that also.
He served one six month stint in the CCCs, being discharged on December 19, 1939. His discharge was signed by Camp McCoy Camp Commander Max S. Edelstein.
He has been deceased for many years now and as I grow older I have come to realize how important the Camps were in his life. He spoke of them in a warm way always..
