Biography of Glenn Donald Smith

CCC Man, Company 341, Camp S-104, Benton, PA

Glenn Donald Smith, from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, enrolled in the CCCs on October 3, 1934. He was sent to Company 341, Camp S-104, in Benton, Pennsylvania, arriving the next day. His commanding officer was Captain Jack D. Thompson. Other officers at the camp during his stay were 1st Lieutenant Clifford Evans, 2nd Lieutenant William Silsby, and Lt. Graham. His supervisors were Phillipps and Young.

During his time there he worked as a brush burner, an axeman and doing K.P. (Kitchen Patrol, helping with meal preparation and clean up). He also played on the camp basketball team.

During his time he purchased a souvenir book called Hysterical History of the CCC which is an autograph book with cartoons. In it he set forth this information, and noted the cartoons with names of the men in camp to whom the cartoons applied in his opinion. From them one can get a feel for the characters of the camp, a very subjective humorous and unique look into the life of Company 341 as seen through the eyes and humor of Mr. Smith.

From his notations in a souvenir book called Hysterical History of the CCC, an illustrated autograph book, it is apparent that the men at his camp spent some of their weekends in nearby Berwick, where many apparently made the acquaintance of the young ladies of that town.

After his enlistment, he was discharged at camp on March 31, 1936 and arrived home on April 1st.

Men who signed Mr. Smith's Autograph Book (presumably members of Co. 341 or staff), with hometowns where provided. Names may be approximate as not always clear handwriting. Some names are clearly nicknames.
